Maison Tortue (Turtle House) is an enchanting three-story house in the bastide village of Castelnau-de-Montmiral.  This home away from home is a minute’s walk away from the 16th-century market square with its café, hotel, and restaurants.  It is perfectly situated to be used as a base for exploring the richly historic surrounding area or as a quiet retreat.

Maison Tortue has been fully restored with many original features carefully preserved.  This original 16th century stone house was a writer’s haven for many years. 

As well as a beautiful open-roofed terrace, the house boasts endless unique features from the custom-made, hand carved front door to the intriguing centuries old statues imported from England. 

An eclectic collection of books in English on subjects ranging from music, art, travel, architecture and a variety of creative pursuits are available for visitors' perusal. For the musically minded, an acoustic guitar and various percussion instruments await.

Typical of houses in the village, the central "living" area of this house is located on the second floor. The kitchen, dining and living rooms and a cozy sleeping nook share this open-concept space. There is no central heating in the house but the many electrical heaters, fireplace and wood-stove keep these small areas well heated in the off-season months
